写真家 森山大道先生の初期写真集の再構築版を作成させていただきました。

表紙には、和紙を思わせる｢わたがみ　雪｣が採用されました。この紙は、風合いが強い分表面が極めてデコボコしており、普通に印刷したのではインキの載りが悪いという特徴があります。そこで最初に印圧を強くかけてニスを印刷して、表面に平滑さを出し、後から印刷するインキの沈みを防ぎました。

そのうえで、森山先生の世界観を表す農度たっぷりのスミの2度刷を行います。ブルー部分には鮮やかさを出すために高演色インキのシアン＋蛍光グリーンで調肉した特練りインキを使用。さらに濃度たっぷりのスミ刷の対極にある深みのある白を表現するため、オペークホワイトに高演色インキのシアンとアクセントとしてのスミをほんの少し混ぜたインキで白を印刷しました。これによって、和紙調のわたがみのデコボコ風合いを残しながら、とても鮮やかで力強い印象の表紙が出来ました。

本文においても、濃度ある初版のグラビア印刷のイメージをオフセット印刷で再現するためトリプルトーン(スミ2度刷＋特色グレー)にて印刷。特にグレーについては青味を帯びた色を再現すべくテストを重ね、最適なグレー色を導きだし、初版本からの複写と思えないほどのボリューム感と迫力で再現しています。

I have created a reconstructed version of photographer Daido Moriyama’s early photo book.

The cover features “watagami snow,” which is reminiscent of Japanese paper. This paper has a strong texture and an extremely uneven surface, making it difficult for ink to adhere to it when printed normally. Therefore, we first printed varnish by applying strong printing pressure to create a smooth surface and prevent ink from sinking later.

After that, we will make a second printing of the ink with plenty of agricultural content that represents Mr. Moriyama’s worldview. For the blue parts, special ink mixed with high color rendering ink cyan + fluorescent green is used to bring out the vividness. Furthermore, in order to express a deep white that is the opposite of a rich black-and-white print, we printed the white using an opaque white ink mixed with cyan, a high color rendering ink, and a small amount of black-and-white ink as an accent. As a result, we were able to create a cover with a very vivid and powerful impression while retaining the uneven texture of Japanese paper-like cotton.

The main text is also printed in triple tone (double ink printing + special color gray) to reproduce the dense gravure printing image of the first edition with offset printing. For gray in particular, we conducted repeated tests to reproduce a bluish color, and found the optimal gray color, which has been reproduced with such volume and power that it is hard to believe that it is a copy from the first edition.
