三菱地所グループのロイヤルパークホテルズが展開する「THEシリーズ」のフラッグシップブランド、アイコニックの名古屋初出店「ザ・ロイヤルパークホテル　アイコニック名古屋」さまの室内に置かれるコンセプトブック『Journey in Central Japan　～受け継がれる技と魂～』の印刷製本を担当させていただきました。

「アイコニック名古屋」は、再開発で生まれ変わった歴史ある「中日ビル」の上層部にあります。「旅する、チュウブ。」をコンセプトに、館内には中部地方で産出される木や石や土、さらに美濃和紙、瀬戸組子、三州瓦、飛騨家具といった中部地方の伝統技術を使ったアイテムが様々配されています。

室内に置かれるコンセプトブック『Journey in Central Japan　～受け継がれる技と魂～』には、ホテルの館内紹介ともに中部地方の各県とその伝統技術の職人たちを紹介しています。館内装飾の数々のアイテムを紹介し、その背景を語ることで、深みを際立たせています。

色調などにももちろん気をつかいましたが、この本の一番のポイントは上製本表紙の表面の紙に伝統技術である手すきの『美濃和紙』を使用したところです。今回の美濃和紙は千田崇統氏の作品ですが、すべて微妙に厚みも繊維の入り方も違い、機械で作るような安定した仕様の紙ではありません。表紙貼りも機械には通りませんのでほぼ手作業となり、そのあと本として仕上げるまでの工程でも表紙自体がばらついていますので、格段に難易度が高いものとなります。構想段階から製本現場と綿密な打ち合わせを行い、サンプルの用紙を取り寄せて検証し、難しいがなんとか行けるであろうというところまで詰めたうえで、職人技を含めてやっと実現することができたものです。

おかげで、内容ばかりでなくその仕様でも体現した、貴重なホテルのコンセプトブックを世に出すことができました。

Iconic Nagoya Concept Book: Journey in Central Japan – Inherited Skills and Spirit

We had the honor of handling the printing and binding of the concept book Journey in Central Japan – Inherited Skills and Spirit, which is placed in the guest rooms of The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Nagoya, the flagship brand of Mitsubishi Estate Group’s Royal Park Hotels “THE Series.”

Located on the upper floors of the newly redeveloped, historic Chunichi Building, the hotel embodies the concept of “Traveling Through Chūbu.” Throughout the hotel, materials native to the Chūbu region—such as local wood, stone, and clay—are showcased, alongside traditional crafts including Mino washi paper, Seto kumiko woodwork, Sanshu roof tiles, and Hida furniture.

The in-room concept book introduces not only the hotel’s interior and design but also highlights the cultural richness of the Chūbu region by featuring local artisans and their traditional techniques from each prefecture. By narrating the stories behind the various handcrafted elements used in the hotel’s décor, the book adds depth and context to the guest experience.

While great care was taken with color tone and print quality, the most distinctive feature of this book is the handmade cover, which uses traditional, handcrafted Mino washi paper—a renowned Japanese craft. The paper, created by artisan Takatsune Senda, varies slightly in thickness and fiber texture due to its handmade nature. Unlike machine-made paper, it is not uniform, and the binding process posed particular challenges. The covers could not be processed by machine and had to be applied almost entirely by hand. Because each sheet of washi is subtly different, aligning and finishing the covers required the utmost skill and attention.

From the planning stage, we worked closely with the bookbinding team, sourcing paper samples, conducting tests, and refining each process to make the concept a reality—maximizing the role of craftsmanship at every stage.

Thanks to these efforts, we were able to produce a concept book that not only conveys the story of the hotel through its content but also physically embodies its spirit and philosophy through its exquisite craftsmanship.
