２０２１年に１０７歳で亡くなった篠田桃紅は、墨を使った新たな表現方法で、世界的に知られる孤高の美術家です。墨象という独自の表現を追い求め、ダイナミズムと厳しさを持つ実力の世界に身を投じ、ニューヨークをはじめ世界を舞台に活躍しました。日本の古典から発展させた彼女の所や墨象作品には、圧倒的な存在感と凛とした気品に溢れます。

世界から評価されるそんな篠田氏ですが、２０２５年２月１５日（土）～２３日（日）の会期で、福岡三越にて展覧会が開かれます。彼女のアトリエに残されていた秘蔵の原画や書、屏風など150点規模の作品展示に加え、桃紅が最後まで愛用していた手描きの着物、墨、硯、筆、落款、器などを特別展示されます。そちらで販売もされる絵画カタログを作成させていただきました。

今回のカタログでは、その中の５０点ほどを掲載しています。かなりギリギリの日程の中、篠田氏の作品の特徴である墨の雰囲気や金属感といったところを、プロセス４色のみで再現すべく、打ち合わせをしながら修正していきました。並行して、いただいたレイアウトイメージから実際の印刷のレイアウトデータを作成する業務も行っています。

限られた時間の中で、スピードと品質の両立が求められた仕事でした。特に篠田氏の絵は、墨の深さはもちろん、金や銀の地に描いた作品も多く、特殊印刷は使わずプロセス４色でその雰囲気を表現するのは技術と経験がないとかなり難しいです。しかし、当社の豊富な美術印刷の画像処理の経験により、バラ校→折り出しの２回の確認のみで的確に色修正を進めています。表紙は雁垂れ表紙を採用し、前と後ろに扉としてファンシー紙を挟み込んで雰囲気を出しています。

Toko Shinoda, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 107, was a unique artist known worldwide for her new method of expression using ink. Pursuing the unique form of expression known as sumi-zo, he immersed himself in the world of dynamism and rigor, and was active in New York and other parts of the world. Her works, which were developed from Japanese classics, are full of overwhelming presence and dignified elegance.

Mr. Shinoda is highly acclaimed around the world, and an exhibition will be held at Fukuoka Mitsukoshi from Saturday, February 15th to Sunday, February 23rd, 2025. In addition to an exhibition of 150 treasured original paintings, calligraphy, and folding screens left in her atelier, there will also be a special exhibition of hand-painted kimono, ink, inkstones, brushes, seals, and vessels that Toko used until the end. I have created a catalog of paintings that will also be sold there.

This catalog features about 50 of them. Despite the extremely tight schedule, we held meetings and revised the work in order to recreate the ink atmosphere and metallic feel that characterize Shinoda’s work using only four process colors. At the same time, we also create actual printing layout data from the layout images we receive.

The work required both speed and quality within a limited time. In particular, many of Mr. Shinoda’s paintings are drawn on gold or silver backgrounds as well as the depth of the ink, and it is quite difficult to express that atmosphere with four process colors without using special printing without skill and experience. However, due to our extensive experience in image processing for fine art printing, we are able to accurately correct the color with only two checks: from the initial stage to the folding stage. The cover uses a wild goose cover, and fancy paper is sandwiched between the front and back as doors to create an atmosphere.
