PAPERSKY72号の特集は山口県です。“Walkable”をテーマに掲げ、主要な歴史的街道を経由する山口、萩、長門の3つの街を、喫茶、酒、陶芸、温泉をキーワードに歩いて巡ります。

旅のゲストは、2024年のNY Times の「2024年にいくべき 52の場所」で山口を選出したクレイグ・モドさん。訪問先では、その街に暮らすシティガイドがお出迎え。歩き旅の出会いを楽しみながら、過去と現代を結ぶ土地の歴史的偉人について学び、「神仏習合」を現代の湯治場で再現するなど、山口県ならではの文化の奥行きについて探ります。

PAPERSKYは写真にもこだわった作品ですので、毎号かならず本番と同じ印刷機で色校正をとります。制作スタッフの皆様と誠晃印刷の担当者、プリンティングディレクターが渋谷の編集部に一堂に会して色校正をチェックし、細かい部分まで色の再現性を追求していきます。紙の質感に合わせた写真の印刷は、デジタルとはまた異なる「作品」としての価値を生み出しています。

The special feature of PAPERSKY issue 72 is Yamaguchi Prefecture. With the theme of “Walkable,” we will walk through the three cities of Yamaguchi, Hagi, and Nagato along major historical roads, focusing on cafes, sake, pottery, and hot springs.

The guest on the trip was Craig Modo, who selected Yamaguchi as one of the 2024 NY Times’ “52 Places to Visit in 2024”. At the destination you visit, you will be greeted by a city guide who lives in that city. While enjoying the encounters of walking, we will explore the depth of culture unique to Yamaguchi Prefecture, such as learning about the historical greats of the land that connect the past and present, and recreating the “Shinto-Buddhist syncretism” at a modern hot spring spa.

Since PAPERSKY is a work that focuses on photography, each issue is color-proofed using the same printing machine used for the production. All production staff, Seiko Printing personnel, and the printing director gather together at the editorial department in Shibuya to check color proofing and pursue color reproducibility down to the finest details. Printing photos that match the texture of the paper creates a value as a “work” that is different from digital printing.
