　写真家・塩田正幸氏の四半世紀にわたって制作した作品群をまとめた写真集『RETINAGAZER』を印刷させていただきました。“反射神経”を最大限に追求したスナップ写真で構成された『NPEAKER』や『LIFE HUNTER』などの初期作から、「写ってなくても良い」という言葉に向き合い、内向的な写真実験を試行錯誤した『ケの日ヒョウハク』シリーズ。そして“網膜を凝視する者”という作家の根底にある概念に辿り着いた本書タイトルでもある『RETINAGAZER』など、ジャンルやカテゴリーに捉われず、写真の存在意義に向き合い、問いただしてきた塩田正幸氏の実験的な活動の記録が綴じられた、まさに”集大成”とも言える一冊です。

　そんな力の入った一冊ですが、印刷のほうもしっかりとその世界観を実現すべく、設計製作しました。写真の質感とボリューム感の再現を鑑み、線数は通常より細かい230線に設定しました。本のサイズは、Ａ４定型よりも一回り大きいワイド判（310mm×225mm）で一般的な機械で印刷を可能にしてコストを抑えながら、持った時の物質的存在感を求めました。校正は写真をそれぞればらばらの状態で確認いただく「バラ校」でしたが、そこでしっかりと色を作りこんだうえで、最終的には全台立ち合いをしていただいています。

　製本はケース付きのかがり上製本で、開きを確保できるフォローバックで作っています。しっかりとした印象を与えつつ、表紙やケースにはシルクスクリーンで文字を入れ、裏表紙には大きな白い台紙になるようシルクスクリーンのホワイト印刷をしています。これは本体に、印刷したトレーシングペーパーのカバーをかけると、台紙に合わさって写真がうかびあがるというギミックです。
　トータルのコストコントロールも考えながら、オーソドックスにしてごまかしの効かない造り、そのうえでのカバーを使った遊び、本文の色の作りこみといった、とてもしっかりとした本になりました。

We had the honor of printing RETINAGAZER, a photography book that brings together a quarter century of work by Masayuki Shioda.
The book traces Shioda’s creative trajectory—from his early works such as NPEAKER and LIFE HUNTER, composed of snap photographs that pursue “reflexes” to their utmost limits, to the Ke no Hi Hyōhaku series, in which he confronted the idea that “it is not necessary for something to be visible” and engaged in inward-looking photographic experiments through repeated trial and error. The volume culminates in RETINAGAZER, the book’s title and a concept that Shioda ultimately arrived at—“one who gazes into the retina,” a fundamental idea underlying his practice. Unbound by genre or category, this book documents Shioda’s experimental activities as he continuously confronted and questioned the very significance of photography. It can truly be described as a culmination of his work.

To fully realize the book’s ambitious vision, the printing was carefully designed and executed. In order to reproduce both the texture and sense of volume in the photographs, a fine 230-line screen—finer than standard—was selected. The book is produced in a wide format (310 × 225 mm), slightly larger than standard A4. By ensuring it could be printed on conventional presses, costs were controlled while still achieving a strong physical presence in the hand. Proofing was conducted through partial color proofs, allowing individual photographs to be reviewed separately; after meticulous color adjustment at this stage, the final press run was carried out with full on-press supervision.

The binding is a thread-sewn hardcover with a slipcase, using a lay-flat follow-back structure to ensure excellent opening. While maintaining a solid, substantial feel, the cover and slipcase feature silkscreen-printed lettering, and the back cover is printed with white silkscreen ink to create a large white base. When a printed tracing-paper cover is placed over the book block, it aligns with this base, causing the photograph to subtly emerge—a carefully considered visual device.
While keeping overall cost control in mind, the book was produced to a high standard, combining an orthodox, uncompromising construction with playful use of the cover and carefully considered colour rendering throughout the photographs.
