村越としや様（1980年福島県須賀川市生まれ）は、故郷福島の風景に静けさと時間の層を見つめ続ける写真家です。中判カメラで撮影し、自ら現像・プリントを行うスタイルを貫き、土地の記憶や人の営みを丁寧に掬い取る作品で高い評価を得ています。

同氏18冊目の写真集で最新刊となる本書『より深い静けさのために風は唱う』では、村越としや氏が積み重ねてきた福島での撮影アーカイブに、さらに時間の層を重ねる試みがなされています。本書は国内で有数のアート出版の祭典、TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR 2025（TABF）で発表されました。

今回の我々のミッションは、オリジナルモノクロプリントの柔らか且つ力強く、精緻な魅力を、写真集という紙のメディアできちんと表現することでした。まず写真集全体のトーンを定めるために、入稿会議で打ち合わせました。オリジナルプリント一点一点のディティールを尊重するため、弊社PDによるディレクションによって、精緻な階調再現を可能にする製版上でのデータ処理やスクリーニング処理を採用し、印刷時のダブルトーン用グレーはオリジナル調合インキとすることを決めました。そのうえでコスト面も考慮して、セレクトした特徴のある写真部分のみを用紙２種類で本機校正をとって、方向性の最終確認を行っています。

また、表紙には和紙のような風合いのある用紙を用い、写真の再現性を高めるために特殊加工を施しました。表紙・裏表紙・遊び紙には特殊銀インキを使用し、紙の風合いを生かしつつ写真のニュアンスを引き出しました。さらに、本刷りに際しては印刷立会をしていただき、最終的な仕上がり確認をいただいています。

Toshiya Murakoshi (born 1980 in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture) is a photographer who has long observed the quietude and layered passage of time within the landscapes of his native Fukushima. Working exclusively with a medium-format camera and developing and printing his photographs himself, he has earned high acclaim for works that gently yet attentively capture the memories of the land and the traces of human life.

In his eighteenth and latest photobook, “The Wind Prays for Sublime Stillness” Murakoshi attempts to add further layers of time to the extensive archive of photographs he has accumulated in Fukushima. The book was unveiled at THE TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR (TABF), one of Japan’s leading festivals for art publishing.

Our mission for this project was to faithfully convey the soft yet powerful and highly detailed qualities of Murakoshi’s original monochrome prints through the medium of a printed photobook. We first held an editorial meeting to establish the overall tonal direction of the book. To respect the unique details of each original print, our production director oversaw data processing and screening techniques capable of highly precise tonal reproduction during plate-making, and we decided to use a custom-blended gray ink for duotone printing. Taking cost into consideration, we then conducted press proofs on two selected paper stocks, using only specific images that presented distinctive characteristics, to confirm the final direction.

For the cover, we chose a paper with a washi-like texture and applied special finishing techniques to enhance photographic fidelity. Special silver ink was used on the cover, back cover, and endpapers, allowing the natural texture of the paper to remain while drawing out photographic nuance. Additionally, Murakoshi attended the final printing session to verify the ultimate quality of the finished work.
