鮮烈な色彩空間を特徴とした新進気鋭のアーティスト、玉山拓郎氏のGASBOOKです。色彩空間はRGB（光の三原色）で表現されていて、印刷はCMYK（色の三原色＋黒）での表現が基本になりますが、ここで再現領域の違いが大きな問題となります。CMYKでの表現は、RGBに比べて表現できる範囲が小さく、特に鮮やかな色を不得手とするのです。特に今回の玉山氏の作品は、鮮やかな色彩を一つの特徴とされますので、印刷でここの部分をどのように解決するかは、本質的な大きな問題となります。

今回は、特にそういった傾向の強い作品部分に高演色インキを採用し、さらに蛍光ピンクでの補色を行って版を作成いたしました。高演色インキは、CMYのもともとのインキをより鮮やかな色にすることで、全体での表現色域を1割ほど広げたものです。全体の1割ですと大したことないように感じますが、印象的な作品はその広がった部分に多くの色が存在していたりするので、作品の性質によりますが通常インキと比べると圧倒的な差を生むことが可能です。さらに、蛍光ピンクを補色に加えることで、より通常ではありえないような色を出すことができました。

こういった技は、うまく使わないとバランスを崩したり、せっかくやったのに効果が得られなかったりします。もちろん校正刷りを入れて、確認しながら進行しておりますが、経験豊かな誠晃印刷だからスムーズといえるでしょう。

This is a GASBOOK by Takuro Tamayama, an up-and-coming artist known for his vivid color spaces. The color space is expressed in RGB (the three primary colors of light), and printing is basically expressed in CMYK (the three primary colors + black), but the difference in reproduction area becomes a big problem here. CMYK has a smaller range of expression than RGB, and is particularly weak at producing vivid colors. In particular, one of the characteristics of Mr. Tamayama’s works this time is bright colors, so how to solve this aspect with printing is a fundamental problem.

This time, we used high color rendering ink for the parts of the work where such tendencies are particularly strong, and also created a plate using a complementary color of fluorescent pink. High color rendering ink is an ink that expands the overall color gamut by approximately 10% by making the original CMY inks more vivid. 10% of the total may not seem like a big deal, but impressive works have many colors in a wide area, so depending on the nature of the work, it can make an overwhelming difference compared to regular ink. Furthermore, by adding fluorescent pink to the complementary color, we were able to create a color that would not normally be possible.

If these techniques are not used properly, they may cause you to lose your balance, or they may not be as effective even if you try them. Of course, we are making proofs and checking the process as we go along, but since Seiko Printing is so experienced, it can be said to be a smooth process.
