2020年に行ったミャンマーでの撮影で「記憶の再生」と「存在の循環」という普遍的な主題に迫ったという写真家・山田薫氏。当時の風景は世界的な混乱や様々な変化により、もう失われてしまったかもしれませんが、写真はその時の光景を記録し、消えてしまった景色を未来へとつなぐ力を持っています。それは永遠に繰り返すけれど、同じ瞬きは二度とない。星の瞬きのように。

　本文は写真集ながら白地を大きくとったレイアウトで、全体として印象的に構成されています。写真家の「記憶の再生」という循環の物語への想いを具現化するために、表紙は古着をリユースした布貼りです。古着を布地としたうえで、製本に適するように裏貼り工程を経て、表紙貼りをしています。本自体も強度を保ちながら開きをよくするために糸かがり綴じのフォローバックで製本しました。

　わざわざ本という形にするにあたり、絵柄以外の要素も一緒に込めることで、より印象深い品とすることができました。写真家さまの想いを物体としての本に込めることができたと思います。

Title: “Matataki” —Photobook by Kaoru Yamada

In 2020, photographer Kaoru Yamada traveled to Myanmar to capture images that approach the universal themes of “the regeneration of memory” and “the cycle of existence.” Although the landscapes she encountered may already have been altered or lost amid global upheaval and rapid change, photography preserves those fleeting moments and carries vanished scenes into the future. Like the twinkling of stars, the cycle may be eternal, yet no single blink is ever the same.

Despite being a photobook, the interior layout features generous white space, creating a striking and contemplative composition throughout. To embody the photographer’s vision of memory as a cyclical narrative, the cover is cloth-bound using repurposed vintage garments. The reclaimed fabric underwent a backing process to ensure durability and suitability for binding before being carefully applied to the cover.

For the binding, we adopted a thread-sewn follow-back structure to achieve both strength and excellent lay-flat quality, allowing the photographs to be viewed comfortably while maintaining the book’s structural integrity.

By choosing the form of a book and incorporating expressive elements beyond the images themselves, we were able to create a deeply memorable piece. The final work embodies the photographer’s vision not only through imagery, but also as a tangible object—one that carries her thoughts and intentions within its very materiality.
