　蜷川実花様は、鮮烈な色彩と光を自在に操り、被写体の内側に潜む感情や時間の気配を写し出す写真家として高い評価を獲得しています。写真家として精力的に数々の展覧会を開催し多数の賞を獲得しているのはもちろん、映画監督としても活動の幅を広げ、2020年東京オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会組織委員会理事にも就任するなど、名実ともに現代日本を代表する写真家といえるでしょう。

　この写真集『Vira』に収録された作品の多くは、桜の輪郭を保ちながらも、花びらが光の中でかすかに溶けていく瞬間をとらえたものです。形そのものではなく、光と感情のゆらぎを写すという意志が、印象派絵画を思わせる抽象的な世界をつくり出しています。

　編集・造本設計・出版は造本家・町口覚氏が手掛け、表紙には2025年4月に目黒川で採取したソメイヨシノの花びらから抽出した染料で染め上げた特注生地を使用。散りゆく桜の記憶がそのまま息づく素材に、“桜の花びらが空から舞い、土へ還る。”というコンセプトを重ね、Sky Edition／Soil Editionの2種類が制作されました。本書は世界最大級の写真フェア「PARIS PHOTO 2025」で発表され、大きな話題を呼びました。

　印刷工程では、広色域インキと高精細スクリーニング、そして用紙アラベールとマットニスの特性を早期段階から町口様と当社プリンティングディレクターが共有し、色の表現方針を丁寧にすり合わせました。その結果、桜の花びらが持つ柔らかな輪郭、丸みを帯びた繊細な階調、そしてビビッドでありながらも淡くにじむ色の重なりを、紙面上で豊かに再現することができました。鮮やかさと儚さが共存する蜷川作品の特性を、誠晃印刷の技術により確かな質感として紙面に表現しています。

　国内では、桜の季節に合わせ、東京・銀座蔦屋書店にて刊行記念展（2026年3月25日〜31日）が開催されるほか、著名アーティストとのコラボレーション企画も進行しています。春の訪れとともに作品世界を体感できる貴重な機会となる予定です。

Mika Ninagawa has garnered high acclaim as a photographer who freely manipulates vivid colors and light to capture the emotions hidden within her subjects and the subtle signs of the passage of time. Beyond her energetic career as a photographer marked by numerous exhibitions and awards, she has expanded her creative range as a film director and served as an Executive Board Member of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, making her a truly representative photographer of contemporary Japan in both name and reality.

Many of the works included in Vira capture moments where cherry blossom petals, while retaining their outlines, seem to faintly melt into the light. The intent to capture not merely the form, but the fluctuation of light and emotion, creates an abstract world reminiscent of Impressionist paintings.

The editing, book design, and publishing were handled by book designer Satoshi Machiguchi. The cover features custom-made fabric dyed with pigment extracted from Somei Yoshino cherry petals collected along the Meguro River in April 2025. Overlaying the concept of “cherry blossom petals dancing from the sky and returning to the soil” onto a material where the memory of falling blossoms lives on, two versions were produced: the Sky Edition and the Soil Edition. This book was unveiled at “PARIS PHOTO 2025,” one of the world’s largest art fairs dedicated to photography, where it created a significant buzz.

In the printing process, Mr. Machiguchi and our Printing Director shared the characteristics of the wide-color gamut inks, high-definition screening, Araveal paper, and matte varnish from an early stage, carefully aligning the direction of color expression. As a result, we were able to richly reproduce on paper the soft contours of the petals, the rounded and delicate gradations, and the layering of colors that are vivid yet bleed faintly. The coexistence of vibrancy and ephemerality characteristic of Ninagawa’s work has been expressed as a tangible texture through the technical expertise of Seiko Printing.

To coincide with the cherry blossom season in Japan, GINZA TSUTAYA BOOKS in Tokyo will host a launch exhibition from March 25 to 31, 2026. In addition to the exhibition, collaborative projects with renowned artists are currently in development. These events will offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of the work as spring arrives.
